Has anyone else noticed how much uglier pro-life and anti-gay protest signs are when compared to left-leaning political signs? It’s like the lack of artistic and creative ability go hand in hand with the visceral hate they hold for other groups of humans. I’ve been seeing so many videos of far-right protesters lately, and I’m sure you all have too. It’s hard to escape them, really. But staring at them, having to watch them spew their hatred nonstop has been forcing me to think. It’s been forcing me to observe them closer and closer each time I come across them, to the point I’ve noticed this hideous pattern of half-assed, ugly black and white signage. It’s like their hatred is literally incapable of being digestible, even when in physical form. So, I asked myself, why is it that something as basic as their protest signs are so much uglier than the average left-aligned sign? Why is it that their artistry is so limited, even through music and paintings? I believe this pattern is deeper than just flat-out bad graphic design. I believe it can be connected to how little these people value art as a whole. 

Let me put it this way. Think of an art piece. Any art piece, whether it be a painting, drawing, or sculpture. Typically, when the average person is asked to envision an art piece, they will think of classical, renaissance, euro-centric art. The average person would think of, say, Napoleon Crossing the Alps, not the Portrait of Ross in L.A. Obviously, you can see where I’m going with this. The right’s flippant disregard for any artistry besides nonpartisan portraiture is clearly tied to the centuries of colonization of art in the West. The association between whiteness and class was apparent in the golden era of imperialism. A striking example of this would be the Nazis in Germany. When the Nazis gained control of Germany, they first began to destroy any art they considered “degenerate”. This included any political, abstract, or otherwise non-conformist art forms. Cubism was deemed immoral. Surrealism was deemed “too imaginative”. Nazis knew art was a voice for those with no way to speak. They understood how creativity was a gateway to individualism, to protest, and to diversity. Any art that did not display the Aryan race above all was a threat to the future of the nation. This is why the average artist is marginalized. Intellectual art is easily born from struggle, from community and from the unique human experience. MAGA protesters and activists share much of their ideological views with Nazis and Imperialists. At the core of their belief is oppression. Therefore, the art they consume must also abide by this standard of practice.

So, how does this connect back to ugly modern protest signs? Well, think of it this way. Pretend you’re a Proud Boy. Why on gods green earth would you ever want to go to a modern art museum? Why would you ever want to expose yourself to such degeneracy, when the only art worth looking at is objective? That doesn’t require you to think critically? Remember, these people love Nazis, even if they don’t say it out loud. A majority of them would agree with Hitler on most things. They don’t think critically about anything, much less how their hateful rhetoric displays on a poster. You can’t expect them to want to study the ins and outs of graphic design and composition when plain, euro-centric, objectively beautiful art is the only thing they can understand or wrap their heads around. So, instead of clever remarks and puns on their protest signs, like most leftist activists display, they just slap a huge red X on top of a pride flag with big black letters above reading “GOD HATES FAGS”. It’s flat-out objective. It gets right to the point. And it’s also ugly. It’s ugly because of systemic racial programming. It’s ugly of the demonization of art as a whole. And simply, it’s ugly because these people are ugly, inside and out. So, the next time you see one of these protesters and their signage, ask yourself if they’re even smart enough to understand what they’re so thoughtlessly execrative against.
